Jennette McCurdy has announced the publication of a memoir detailing the abuse she suffered at the hands of her late mother, who pushed her to become a child star.
In I’m glad my mother diedthe former actor – best known for his role as Sam Puckett on Nickelodeon iCarly and Sam & Cat – describes her grueling childhood in the spotlight, including how her anxiety and self-loathing led to eating disorders and addiction.
Go to Instagram that iCarly star released the book cover of the memoir and announced it will be released on August 9th.
“I laughed and cried a lot while writing it and I’m proud of what it turned out to be,” McCurdy wrote in the caption.
McCurdy’s mother, Debra McCurdy, died of breast cancer in 2013 after being diagnosed when her daughter was 3 years old. In 2019, McCurdy wrote a personal essay in HuffPost She details her history of eating disorders, supported by her mother and the entire entertainment industry.
The former actor first spoke directly about her mother’s abuse on her one-woman show — also titled I’m glad my mother died — which she performed in Los Angeles and New York City in early 2020.
McCurdy says her mother became obsessed with making her “cripplingly shy” daughter a star and began bleaching her hair and whitening her teeth when she was 10, and performed vaginal and breast exams and didn’t let her shower alone until she was 17.
she said Weekly entertainment: “I feel like I didn’t have the tools, language or support at the time to advocate for myself, so this book is a way for me to not only honor that experience and give a voice to my former self but hopefully also encourage young people to speak out in settings where they may be conditioned to just ‘play ball’ and ‘be a good sport’.
Of the book’s colorful cover, McCurdy added, “Confetti spurting out of an urn seemed like a good way to capture the humor in the tragedy.”
She added, “I ended up choosing an expression that I think reads sincere, a little pained and a little hopeful.”
