A COLLEGE student won £500 at Saturday’s Grand National in a bet placed before he was born.
Isaac Whitcombe discovered in a time capsule given to him by his uncle when he was 18.
Along with a copy of Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the romantic comedy Love Actually, the haul also included a 50-1 each-way bet on horse number 3 for the 2022 Grand National .
Last month after turning 18, Isaac finally got the ticket and won £500 after the 8/1 horse Delta Work finished third in the race.
Isaac told The Sun: “The Grand National was a fantastic race and it was great to see Delta Work come so close.
“My uncle won me £500 and I’m delighted – it’s a great birthday gift.
“It was a really thoughtful idea and now I have a bit more money for the drums. It was the perfect birthday present.”
The bet was placed for him by his uncle Daniel, 42, just days before the student from Guildford, Surrey, was born in 2004.
Last month, Isaac finally got the ticket and was able to win over £3,000 – but missed out on bagging the top possible win on his first ever legal bet.
He bet the money on Delta Work to rush home but unfortunately the horse only managed third place on 10/1.
Isaac instead collected £500 for the return ticket after the bookies increased its value from £5 to £50.
The family – along with half a billion others – huddled around the TV yesterday to see how Delta Work is faring.

Noble Yeats won the Grand National with 50/1 and Any Second Now finished second with 15/2.
Isaac’s father Andrew, 46, added: “My brother did it for fun 18 years ago when we had our first child.
“But as soon as we realized that Delta Work had a chance, we were all really looking forward to the Grand National and got pretty excited.
“We had the bet slip framed but I had to check with JenningsBet if they would honor it considering it was placed so long ago.
“When they said they would, and they would up the ante, we got excited and Isaac started to get really excited.
“He’s a very enthusiastic drummer, he’s already thinking about getting a new kit.”
The bet was placed in a ‘time capsule’ gift box for baby Isaac in 2004 by his uncle, who now lives in Africa where he runs a charity.
Vicky Knight, Compliance Manager at JenningsBet said: “We couldn’t believe it when we heard about this birthday bet. We loved the story so much we were more than happy to bump it up to £50.
“Luckily, Isaac’s uncle had the foresight to pick a strong favorite and we all hope the luck lasts on Saturday and Isaac can grab a nice win on his 18th birthday present.
“He certainly had to wait a while for it. We wish him and all our customers the best of luck for the Grand National this Saturday.”
Betting and Gaming Council CEO Michael Dugher said: “This is a wonderful story and typifies the enduring love affair this nation has with the Grand National.
“Betting shops are a huge employer and do so much to support the hard-pressed high streets and local economy. Great to see them open again this Saturday. Good luck to Isaac and everyone else who is betting on their horse this Saturday.”
