A father of DESPERATE reached out to doctors when water began to gush from his nose and was shocked to learn he could be dead in six months.
Phil Sledden-Houston’s life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with oral cancer after smoking for decades.
The 51-year-old from Middleton in Greater Manchester realized something was wrong while he was drinking water in 2018 and it came up his nose.
He went to the dental hospital according to a referral, when the specialist said he had cancer and the disease was very serious.
Phil had to undergo an emergency MRI and only a biopsy to yield devastating results.
He told Manchester Evening News: “A week later, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 oral cancer (palliative care) and the doctor told me I had a choice – decide to have surgery within a month or die.
“He said I could live six months and could have Christmas. I had to quit smoking immediately.
“I will never forget how the surgeon told me how serious it was, the tumor was in my cheekbone, and he thought it had been hidden for four years.”
It was about the size of a tennis ball and had to be removed in a successful 15-hour surgery to remove the entire tumor.
Surgeons opened up half of his face to remove an eye, cheekbones and the roof of his mouth before inserting a hip bone to replace what was removed and reconstruct his face.
He has been in remission for three years and has regained his confidence after having a facelift surgery.
Now he is urging others not to make the same mistakes he did.
Phil has been smoking since he was 16 and has never thought about how one day could affect his health.
Without cigarettes, his taste buds have improved dramatically and are saving money.
He said: “I needed the shock of being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer to put an end to it, and I urge everyone to give up smoking before you end up like me.”
