A man who took his uncle’s body to the post office to collect his pension claims he didn’t realize he was dead.
Peadar Doyle, 66, died on Friday – not long before he was lifted up by his grandson Declan Haughney and another man at the counter of Hosey’s store in Carlow, Ireland.
Declan, 40, insists that the duo didn’t realize Mr Doyle was dead when they took him on a five-minute walk to collect his pension.
Now, he says he has been labeled a “murderer” in his local community – but he maintains his innocence and says he is “not an eejit”.
Declan now suffers eye and face injuries after being allegedly assaulted following last Friday’s incident
I said Irish Mirror: Why would I want to rob my uncle? That’s right, I’m 40 years old, I’m not a kid. I am not a young man.
“I am not the right person to walk into Hoseys with a dead man and take his money.
“Am I a cuckoo? Am I a baby? I’m not.”
Declan, who had a drug problem, said he was accused of knowingly bringing in his dead uncle to get benefits because of his past.
He previously stole from his aunt 15 years ago and spent two years in prison.
“That’s why they say it, that’s why this is coming up now – because I’ve done it before,” Declan explains.
“A bank card came through my aunt’s door and I got a pin and got caught for fraud and that’s why this just happened.
“Everybody knows about it in the town you know. But that was 15 years ago. I’ve been away from the device for three years and I’m doing fine. “
Looking back, it is believed that his uncle died before he reached the post office.
He and another man arrested him under a bridge on Pollerton Street, less than a two-minute walk from his home, and brought him to the post office by wrapping an arm around him and dragging him there.
“So we linked him from here to there,” he said. He was walking around as usual and then I believed he was dead.
“This is not a lie, he started dragging his heels away from you see the yellow sign there?
“But we don’t even think of it as anything. We were great then, suddenly he started to fall.
“We didn’t think about it because Peadar had a heart attack and all.”
As they entered the post office, Declan claimed his uncle had just “fallen” to the ground and then he realized he was dead.
“We got in as far as the line,” he said. We held him and when we got to the queue we let him go and he just dropped off. He just fell there and then.
“Why would I try to rob my uncle of money when I’m living in the same house with him and we’re splitting the bills?”
Declan made a voluntary statement to the gardai and was not arrested.
He added: “He is my uncle. The one who raised me. I was shot. My heart was torn in two.”
