Shakira has maintained her innocence as she denied the growing tax evasion allegations against her.
The 45-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker said she was going through the “darkest hours” of her life when the Spanish government threatened her with up to eight years in prison if found guilty, the country with millions of dollars in taxes .
The Colombian pop star is facing a lawsuit for allegedly not paying $14.7 million in taxes while she was living in Spain between 2012 and 2014, a time she claims not to have lived in the country.
Prosecutors insist Shakira lived in the countryside during this time and said she bought a house in Barcelona in May 2012. She said she lived there with her former partner Gerard Piqué and their son, who was born in Spain in 2013.
At the time, Shakira’s official residence was in the Bahamas, but prosecutors claim she spent most of her time in Spain.
“I paid everything they said I owed before they even filed a lawsuit,” she told Elle magazine.
“To this day, I owe them nothing. Finally, I was advised by one of the top four tax firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was confident from day one that I was doing things right and transparently.”
The singer added: “But even without evidence to support these fictitious claims, as they usually do, they resorted to a racy press campaign to try to influence people and pressure the media, along with the threat of reputational damage to force settlement agreements.”
The “She Wolf” crooner has slammed the claims as “false allegations” and told the outlet it plans to fight the case “on principle”.
If found guilty, Shakira – real name Shakira Mebarak – could face a $23.5 million fine in addition to jail time.
She said “Spanish tax authorities often do this” to celebrities and “unfairly to regular taxpayers”.
The ‘Whenever, Wherever’ singer, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, has repeatedly protested her innocence, saying she previously paid the Spanish tax authorities $17.5 million in debt and owes them nothing more.
She maintains that she has “enough evidence to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor.”
