It was supposed to be a magical evening for Questlove at the 2022 Oscars on Sunday night.
But the now Oscar-winning Roots drummer’s moment was overshadowed by Will Smith punches presenter Chris Rock in the face just moments before the musician’s victory for Best Documentary to the “summer of the soul“
Questlove now says he had no idea the altercation between the two men had even happened because he was practicing Transcendental Meditation before it was announced that the winner was going to the zone.
“When the commercial break happened, I was in my [space]said first-time director Questlove on Monday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“When I opened my eyes, I didn’t realize – why is everyone so quiet? I literally wasn’t there the whole moment,” the 51-year-old musician, whose group is the talk show’s house band, told Jimmy Fallon. Questlove’s victory was announced by a shaken Rock, 57, immediately after the incident.
“As I walk up to the stage, I kind of put two and two together and realized that was a real moment, about three seconds before I said anything,” the filmmaker added. “I wasn’t present at all. I was just in a void.”
A source said Page Six This Monday, Questlove and its producers – Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein – were incredibly excited to win the honor but found the whole ordeal “weird”.
“What to say? The air was taken out of the room by everyone, so how can it not affect the moment?” the source said. “I think everyone was stunned. It was a breathtaking moment… It was a strange moment.”
Questlove’s documentary took a look at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which lasted six weeks. The lineup included icons like Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Mahalia Jackson and The 5th Dimension.
The 94th Academy Awards viral moment began when ‘King Richard’ star Smith – who later that evening won the Oscar for Best Actor – marched onto the stage and slapped Rock after he made a not-so-nice joke about hair loss about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The crux of the joke was that the Girls Trip star appeared ready to direct a sequel to the 1997 film GI Jane, which starred a bald Demi Moore.
After returning to his seat, Will yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!”
blacksmith then excused to Rock via Instagram on Monday, writing, “Violence in all its forms is toxic and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable.”
