A motorist has been fined FIVE times on a nightmarish motorway named the most penalized road in Surrey.
A total of 1,084 fines were handed out to motorists parked on Walton High Street, in Elmbridge, Surrey, in just one year – plus more than £100,000 in fixed fines.
One resident was forced to accept the “nightmare” penalty as the new rule – after being slapped with a total of five penalties.
Amy – who drives a luxury BMW – told the Sun: “I’ve never received a parking ticket around here.
“It’s just been a nightmare to come here.
“There’s usually no space or there are cars taking up more than one spot, leaving no room for us.
“I reckon I’ve been hit by four or five parking tickets on my car on this road.”
Fines – which can be up to £100 – are levied for parking in handicapped bays without a badge, stopping in the cargo hold and overstaying in parking stops by 30 minutes.
Photos show another local’s luxury Mercedes 4×4 falling prey to guards after he was fined for parking on double yellow lines outside a KFC takeaway .
Driver Paul – who asked not to give his last name – said: “It’s really annoying, it definitely prevents me from coming here more often but this is really my first ticket here.
“There is not enough parking on the street.”
The high street – home to many chain stores and independent stores – has very little parking.
There are several multi-storey car parks nearby, but these have proved unpopular with locals.
A local business owner said: “There are always ticket gates here, but honestly it’s the driver’s fault, they keep parking in the wrong place all the time.
“There are several cargo holds and spaces for the disabled and they all park there to go to McDonald’s.
“A lot of our delivery drivers get tickets because if you leave your car there, it’s closed, you’re no longer delivering.
“Our customers park there all the time and we just wait for that to happen. I just don’t know why anyone would.
“People are angry but I don’t know why, it’s clearly labeled but people just park there all the time.”
The manager, who has worked on the street for more than 10 years, said she believes locals can be forced into bad parking due to a lack of options.
She said: “Many people who come here say there’s not enough parking around here, if you’re disabled or have a baby, a lot of parking is quite far.
“I would say we see someone getting a ticket every day. There are a few guards here all the time.”
Another local believes the draconian parking rules have changed the way she gets around town.
“Now that I’m walking into town, I don’t know where to park because the old parking lot is under construction,” said Linda Jackson.
“I used to take care of my elderly neighbor next door and she had to come here to go to the bank or shop and I was always worried how I could stop here and take her away.
“Just a few extra spaces on the road. There are these massive sidewalks that we don’t really need.”
A spokesman for Elmbridge Borough Council, which enforces the highway parking rules, said: “The balanced parking restrictions hoped to be achieved are very difficult.
“Residents want traffic to flow, businesses need access to loads, and they also need their customers to have easy access to their premises.”
