GEMMA Collins has revealed that she self-harmed as she struggled with her stormy popularity.
The 41 years old was a car salesman when she first appeared in Towie in 2011 and it took a long time until she became one of the show’s most iconic characters.
Talking about the impact of that for the first time in the new Channel 4 documentary Gemma Collins: Self-Harm and Me, the star tells fiance Rami Hawash what caused her to hurt herself – but insists she never thought of suicide.
“It’s never about you, it’s never about anything,” she said. “It concerns me, obviously I am going through something and the only way I can relieve the pressure is to cut myself.
“I never wanted to kill myself – that never crossed my mind.”
Gemma continued: “It’s kind of like a coping mechanism for me, so you know, when I’m obvious, suddenly I’m popular and then people come back to me every five minutes. Pressure, repression, I wasn’t able to express myself properly.”
Looking to the future, she added: “In my mind because obviously we want to continue, you know, have a baby and a lot of things. I feel so happy with you and very settled with you and I always think in my head, you think, ‘Oh, is it coming back?’ “
As well as being incredibly candid, the film will see Gemma also speak to experts, who will explain how to spot the signs someone is harming themselves and will provide details on what support is available. for people struggling with their mental health.
Gemma Collins: Self-Harm & Me airs at 9pm on Wednesday, February 16 on channel 4.
