I-85 North, I-40 East closed after accident in Orange County

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (WNCN) — All lanes of North Carolina Interstate 85 North and Interstate 40 East are closed following an accident involving an 18-wheel tractor-trailer collision that occurred in nearby Orange County at about 8:50 p.m by Hillsborough, the North Carolina Department, Transport said.

NCDOT said an 18-wheeler collapsed in the middle of the freeway and was then held up by a second tractor-trailer traveling at 65 mph.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer was trapped in the vehicle but was eventually pulled out and transported to UNC Hospital for shock trauma.

The accident happened along I-85 just before it splits from I-40 near exit 163 west of Hillsborough.

A DOT camera shows traffic was stopped at the scene, but cars are now starting to drive along the shoulder, DOT said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol initially closed two lanes but increased it to a full northbound lane closure after dispatching a police officer to the scene, officials told CBS 17 by phone.

Officials confirmed that the man being transported was between 40 and 50 years old and the driver of the broken down 18-wheeler was not injured.

The lanes are expected to be reopened by midnight.
