HYBE CCO says BTS awaits government decision on military exemption

The seven members of the K-pop group bts are currently awaiting a government decision on whether or not they should be drafted into the military. In South Korea, all men must serve at least 18 months in the military.
All Korean men must enroll by the age of 28. While many citizens do so in their 18s or early 20s, K-pop idols often delay until 28 because their careers are interrupted by military service. bts has already received a deferment to age 30 but may not even need to enroll.
Will BTS be exempted from military service?
A hot topic in K-pop is whether or not global superstars will have to enlist BTS for mandatory military service. If granted an exemption, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook will be the first K-pop idols not to serve at all.
However, the government is granting exemptions to entertainers such as some violinists, pianists and ballet artists. Athletes who have won medals at the Olympic Games or a gold medal at the Asian Games are also exempt from active duty.
During a press conference for Permission to dance on stage – Las Vegas, HYBE CCO Lee Jin Hyung addressed the issue head-on. (HYBE is the parent company of the BTS label Big Hit Music.)
“It is true that we are wary of discussing this matter because we know how important the issue of military service is in Korea.”
In December 2020, the Korean government passed the “BTS Military Service Amendment”.
Corresponding Soompi“The law allows artists who receive the recommendation of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to defer their compulsory service until they reach the age of 30 according to international calculations.”
The oldest member of BTS, Jin, would now be actively serving if this amendment had not passed.
BTS leaves the matter of recruiting to their company
If something doesn’t change Jin will have to to win by the end of 2022. However, some members of the National Assembly have proposed a bill that would like to exempt male artists btswho have made significant contributions to the national interest through their military service. South Korean lawmakers have failed to reach consensus on the bill.
Lee Jin Hyung says members are ready to go. “The BTS members have currently left the matter of their military service in the hands of the company.”
“BTS has repeatedly conveyed the message that they will accept the call of duty when the nation calls them, and they haven’t changed that mind.”
He continued, “The company informed BTS that following the proposal of the new amendment to the Military Service Act, we were cautious about making a decision regarding their military service, and the BTS members gracefully accepted this and left the matter in the hands of the.” Company.”
Waiting for a decision makes it difficult for the K-pop group to plan future music and tours
As the members of BTS wait to find out if they will be exempted from military service, the company must plan new music and touring. Not knowing which members will or will not be present creates anxiety.
“To be precise, military service policies are changing and it is true that BTS members are having a hard time because it is difficult for them to predict when they will be in the service.
“Because it is difficult for them to make plans, both the BTS members and the company are currently closely monitoring the proposed change.”
He continued, “Ultimately, we plan to do our utmost to allow a decision to be made that is beneficial to both our society and BTS,” he continued.
HYBE hopes that the National Assembly will receive an answer soon
HYBE hopes that the hiring issue will be resolved quickly.
“Since the issue of BTS’s military service is something that the whole world is interested in, it seems that the debate on this issue is coming to an end both in society and in the National Assembly, and we hope that the issue will be resolved becomes the current National Assembly.
Lee Jin Hyung put pressure on the National Assembly with his closing comments.
“If the issue is referred to the next National Assembly, the debate will continue without promises,” he reiterated, “The uncertainty about BTS’s military service makes things difficult, we hope that the National Assembly will make a decision as soon as possible.” “
