In a 2017 article, the publication gave meaning to pet names like Babe, Soulmate, Squeeze, and Hubby.

First, VICE joked that couples who call themselves Babe are more likely to fight, citing the fact that many couples in movies and on TV use the nickname pleadingly in an argument.

If you call someone a bae, you probably aren’t in a defined relationship with them.

The publication reveals that couples who call each other their best friends are lucky enough to be in a happy relationship.

“How truly blessed you are to be the only person in the history of copulation who considers their long-term sexual partner their best friend,” said VICE contributor Angus Harrison of referring to his partner as his best friend.

A study by insider in 2018 showed that couples who use pet names in their relationships typically have healthier relationship dynamics.

Regarding the term soulmate, Harrison thinks people who use it are either happy or kidding themselves.

“Either you’ve found lasting happiness or you overdo it easily and you’re on the verge of being lonely again.”

When you use the terms fella or missus to refer to your partner, you’re implying that you’re happy to settle down—but you don’t want to make a big deal out of your love.

The nickname husband should only be used if you’re marrying a muscular firefighter, and calling someone your squeeze means you’re in the mindset of an older prankster.

Almost half of Americans in relationships wish their partners would post more “online PDAs”‘ which could very well include some of the pet names mentioned.
