The television dates for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral have been announced.
Following the Queen’s death aged 96 on Thursday September 8, it was announced that a state funeral would be held at Westminster Abbey on Monday (September 19).
As one of his first official acts after his proclamation as the new monarch, King Charles III. the day of the funeral is a public holiday and a national day of mourning.
After a period of viewing at Westminster Hall to allow members of the public to pay their respects, the Queen will then be transferred to Windsor Castle for burial at St George’s Chapel.
She will be buried next to her husband Prince Philip, who died in April 2021.
How to watch the Queen’s funeral in the UK
The funeral will be televised on BBC One and BBC News and is also available to stream on BBC iPlayer, with coverage beginning at 8am BST.
ITV has confirmed that it will broadcast uninterrupted live coverage of the Queen’s State Funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday September 19. Transmission begins at 6am BST, with all five channels and ITV Hub being transmitted simultaneously.
Sky News has also confirmed its broadcast schedule for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, with live coverage available for free throughout the day on Sky News and the Sky News App, YouTube and Freeview. The station will broadcast the funeral procession, followed by coverage of the state funeral service.
Big screens are expected to be set up in cities, with locations to be announced closer to the date.
Cinema chains like Curzon, Arc and Vue will show the funeral for free and cancel all other screenings for the day. Moviegoers must reserve their seats in advance.
The funeral is expected to be one of the most-watched royal events in history, with billions of people around the world tuning in to see the late monarch’s funeral.
Earlier this year, Prince Philip’s funeral was watched by 13 million in the UK, while UK viewership for Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997 was 32.1 million UK viewers.
