Godrick the Grafted is the first demigod boss in Elden Ring and your first obstacle to becoming Elden Lord. Here’s how to defeat Godrick.
The goal of the Tarnished in Elden Ring is to hunt down the demigod children of the goddess Marika, destroy them and take their Elden Ring shards. Godrick the Grafted is the first of them, but he won’t go down without a fight or willingly give up his Shard.
Godrick is the lord of Stormveil Castle and must be defeated to continue the story. as soon as he is the games The world opens up in different ways and the adventure of Elden Ring really begins. Here’s where to find Godrick the Grafted in Elden Ring and how to defeat him.
How to find Godrick the Grafted
Finding Godrick is relatively easy if you follow the game’s main story campaign. Just go through Stormveil Castle until you reach the Mist Gate, which is guarded by a giant Troll and two Exile Knights.
There is a Place of Mercy in a secluded cell to the right outside of Godrick’s Arena. So make sure you heal and equip yourself before you face him.
It is possible to summon the friendly NPC Nepheli to fight Godrick at your side. Her summoning mark is just outside the Mist Gate and she can be a useful ally.
Her damage output isn’t great, but she’ll grab half of Godrick’s attention, allowing you to get some shots on him. You can also bring your necromancy to the fight for more allies.
In order to summon Nepheli, you must first find her and exhaust her dialogue. She can be found in an off-road room outside of Godrick’s Arena where the path curves towards him.
Summoning Nepheli is entirely optional, but we recommend speaking to her even if you don’t summon her in order to continue her questline.
Luckily, Godrick isn’t as difficult as Margit the Fell because he doesn’t have that character’s speed. However, he is still incredibly aggressive and powerful, capable of killing even the most experienced player with just a few hits.
If you haven’t upgraded your weapon to at least +3 on Roundtable Hold, we advise you to do so now. Although most players did so before the clash Margit.
In the first phase of the fight, Godrick swings his ax around wildly, leaving small openings in which to hit him before you have to dodge. After his combo, he swings his ax vertically into the ground and takes a few seconds to recover. So hit him with everything you got and then get out.
His ax strikes are deadly and cover a lot of ground, so melee fighters need to keep on their toes. Ranged fighters simply have to keep their distance and attack him from afar. Don’t let him get too close as getting into his combo will likely mean death.
Blocking can be an effective strategy for strong melee builds, but his combos are fast, powerful, and come in waves. As such, it’s often more advisable to dodge and let his animations run. Be careful though, he can launch into another in a split second.
In the second phase of the boss fight, Godrick grabs a dead dragon and inherits the ability to breathe fire. These attacks deal large AOE fire damage. So if you have gear that offers buffs against fire, now is the time to equip it. Or ideally before the fight begins.
It’s imperative to avoid this dragon fire as it can kill weaker players instantly and has a ridiculous range. So stay mobile and take potshots when you can. If you deal enough damage to Godrick, he will stagger and you can use a critical attack.
Godrick now relies more on fire damage than just physical attacks. So make sure you’ve bought the cookbooks from the various vendors to learn how to craft items that cast wards. You can also loot the Flame Dragon Talisman from the mini-boss in Groveside Cave in Limgrave.
This will help make you a little safer from Godrick’s fire damage. It’s also helpful against the dragon Agheel when it comes to fighting him.
Necromancer to use
Godrick will likely kill your necromancy if left alone, but once Godrick is poisoned, his job is done. After that, it mainly serves as a distraction. If you’re a magic or ranged build, bring the sturdiest Spit Ash you’ve got.
Your necromancy and nepheli can be important allies in this fight. If you’re a melee build, consider picking up the Jellyfish Spirit Ash. This allows you and Nepheli to tank Godrick while your gelled ally poisons him from afar.
If you’ve managed to complete the Frindgefolk Hero’s Grave dungeon from the start of the game and beat the boss there, you’ve unlocked Banished Knight Oleg. This is a powerful unique NPC summon that, along with Nepheli, can tank many Godricks while attacking from afar.
Nepheli will most likely fall as well if the fight goes on too long, but her main value is diverting Godrick’s attention away from you.
Once Godrick falls, you will receive your first Greater Rune, a powerful item that you can use to buff yourself once you unlock its power.
