There are currently around 54,000 ATMs in the UK and most withdrawals come from free-to-use machines.

But today more Britons are more inclined to use cards as a result of the pandemic where cash has been discouraged, and a general drop in cash sales.

Use of cash sharply reduced as people move to safer payments, even after restrictions have been lifted.

Shoppers can now do contactless card payments up to £100 after a rule change was implemented on October 15.

So with more freedom to make larger payments without cash, it could fall even further.

But if you still need to withdraw, we explain how much you can get from each bank per day on the cash machines found on the street and how they compare to your withdrawal over the counter.

How much can you withdraw from an ATM?

Lloyds and Halifax

You can withdraw up to £500 a day from the cash machine.

The maximum amount of cash you can withdraw at the branch counter is £2,500.

However, you can buy more at the counter if you have pre-ordered.

Nationwide

For most Nationwide accounts, the maximum you can withdraw per day is £500 at an ATM but you can get up to £2,000 at a branch.

To do this, you may have to place an order in advance to make sure the bank has enough funds for you to withdraw.

Otherwise you will only be able to get £500 in the branch.

Barclays

The bank says there is no limit to how much you can withdraw over the counter at its branches as long as you have enough in your account.

However, you may have to give them a day’s notice if the amount is over £2,000, so the bank can check if they have enough to give you.

Otherwise, customers with a personal checking account can take out up to £300 a day from an ATM, while Premier and Platinum accounts can take up to £1000 a day.

Barclays Business accounts can receive up to £750 per day and BarclayPlus accounts can receive up to £50 per day.
