DENVER (KDVR) – Do you have some books on your shelf that haven’t been read in a while? Maybe it’s time to donate them to a good cause.

A Denver nonprofit called BookGive are looking for homes for books that are ready for their next chapter.

“We are a nonprofit that provides free books and makes them available where they are needed,” said BookGive CEO Melissa Monforti.

On the corner of West 49th Avenue and Lowell Avenue there is a mental rehab service station. Behind the garage door are thousands of books ready to find a new home.

“The services are a little different, but we are doing one,” said Melissa Monforti, chief executive officer of BookGive.

BookGive accepts donations and partners with organizations throughout the Denver metro area, including senior living facilities, homeless shelters, prisons, schools, nonprofits — “all kinds of organizations might need some books,” says Monforti.

For Monforti, every book becomes an opportunity.

“They are a great way to open your mind to other ways that people think, or experience. … It’s invaluable because it really helps people understand each other,” said Monforti.

“It builds empathy, allows us to be more compassionate to each other, and makes our communities stronger, because we can see each other in stories,” she said.

The organization only started a few years ago, but they’ve already made a big impact, donating more than 85,000 books. And they hope to do more in the community, creating Denver’s first free bookstore.

“Like a food bank, where they have hours of operation where you can go and get the food. Here, you will come and get the replacement book,” Monforti said.

Now, BookGive is asking for the public’s help. Organization currently fundraising to make this dream come true.

Until then, they’ll be hosting community events, including a holiday book giveaway scheduled for Saturday.

“We’re excited to give the community thousands of free books to take with us over the holidays. Monforti said.
