How do I negotiate my desired salary in a new job?

How do you conduct a salary negotiation for a new job? I’ve booked an interview and I want the job, but I don’t want to overprice myself. Conversely, I don’t want to undersell myself either. Any tips?

So much data is released about salary ranges for different jobs in different industries that it’s almost impossible not to get a sense of the general range.

The key is to try not to play your hand first. If you don’t want to voluntarily state how much you earn, you don’t have to – it’s actually against the law for an employer to ask you to.

You might want to say what range you are considering, although this will vary by occasion. Once you receive an offer, you can try to negotiate in a polite and professional manner, while also stating your interest and never giving an ultimatum.

Keeping the dialogue open will ensure that the employer will let you know when they have reached their salary cap before approaching another candidate.

My company asked everyone to return to the office and made masks optional.
My colleague sneezed and coughed and was sent home – and then I tested positive for COVID. My company gave me the time off until I tested negative, but I’m still sick so I have to use my paid time off now. That’s just not right. Do I have recourse?

As unfair as it may seem, your company has the right to enforce its paid time off policy if you stop testing positive. There is no way of knowing if your current illness is related to COVID or if it is just another illness that would cause you to miss work. Up to liability? Anyone who tells you they know the answer to that is not telling you the truth. So many issues surrounding the new workplace — vaccines, masks, transmission, layoffs — will be decided in the years to come.
