Houston police sergeant in need of a kidney transplant to fight his colleague

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A Houston police sergeant received the greatest gift he could ask for – a new kidney.

In October 2020, ABC13’s Mayra Moreno interviewed the Houston Police Department, Sgt. Wade McCoy and family. His son had tears in his eyes thinking about what would happen to his father if he didn’t get the kidney he desperately needed.

His emotional interview struck a chord for many. Thanks to ABC13 viewers, hundreds of people signed up to see if they could be a kidney couple, but who would have thought that the perfect match would be a comrade in a blue shirt.

McCoy said: “My mother insisted he was an angel and that angels were sent from heaven.

The angel McCoy was talking about was Sgt. Mustin, who saw the ABC report last year and as a father, says he needs to be on the list.

“I’ve been a donor but I’ve never considered a living donation,” Mustin said.

Mustin signed up in 2020 to be McCoy’s sponsor, but it wasn’t until the end of 2021 that the officers discovered they were the perfect match.

McCoy said: “It was hard to understand that something like that happened, I told the story to people and they were amazed. Unbelievable”.

The miracle brought these two officers closer together.

Mustin said: “We got to know each other and it was a great experience to know them.

McCoy was speechless. For the first time since his diagnosis in 2017, McCoy’s quality of life has improved. He’s getting much-needed sleep and even enjoying quality family time.

“You hear the police department is a family and takes care of each other. When you’re healthy and well, you don’t think about it,” he said. “But when you need help, you go down and people come to help you. The police have been great and helpful.”

It’s been a real Christmas miracle for the McCoys this holiday and it’s going to be the best they’ve had in a few years.
