Houston police are stepping up mosque patrols after fourth Muslim man was killed in Albuquerque, New Mexico

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said he will be stepping up patrols at mosques across the city after a fourth Muslim man was killed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the past nine months.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the city will “stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters in #Albuquerque and Houston and across the country. An attack on one is an attack on us all.”

“We will continue to work with our local Muslim leaders to provide a sense of safety and security,” Finner said in his tweet Sunday night.

Authorities are investigating whether the murders of four Muslim men in New Mexico’s largest city are connected.

A Muslim man was killed in Albuquerque Friday night and three Muslim men have been killed in ambush gunfire in the past nine months.

Police said Saturday the victim of the latest killing was a South Asian Muslim man believed to be in his mid-20s.

The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by investigators, was found dead after police received an exchange of gunfire.

Earlier this week, police confirmed that local detectives and federal law enforcement officials were looking into possible links between each crime.

Two of the men – Muhammed Afzaal Hussain, 27, and Aftab Hussein, 41 – were killed in the past week and both were from Pakistan and were members of the same mosque. The third case concerns the killing in November of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, a Muslim man of South Asian descent.

Police declined to say whether Friday night’s killing was carried out in a manner similar to the other deaths.

Authorities said they could not say whether the shootings constituted hate crimes until they identified a suspect and determined a motive.

“We will bring that person or those people to justice,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Sunday.

Officials say they need help locating a vehicle believed to be linked to the deaths.

Albuquerque Police said they released photos of the vehicle suspected of being used in the four murders in hopes people could help identify the car. Police said the vehicle they were looking for was a dark gray or silver four-door Volkswagen with tinted windows and appears to be a Jetta.

Police did not say where the pictures were taken or what led them to suspect the car was involved in any of the crimes.

“We have a very, very strong connection,” Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said Sunday. “We have an interesting vehicle… We need to find this vehicle.”
