Houston Crime: Limo driver believes robbers who stole $17,000 followed him from the Galleria to Bush Intercontinental Airport

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — A limousine driver believes he was followed for more than an hour after exiting a bank near the Galleria and stealing $17,000.

“Why do they do that?” asked Nabil Alkhaldi. “Why are they stealing people’s money? They (steal) my future. They steal everything like I’m nothing.”

On July 7, Alkhaldi went to Wells Fargo Bank in San Felipe and Post Oak and withdrew a large sum of cash. From there he picked up a woman and her baby and drove them to Bush Intercontinental Airport. They arrived at the airport’s Terminal B around 4 p.m

“We’ll arrive safely,” Alkhaldi said. “I’m trying to do my job, unload her luggage, help her with the baby. As soon as I’m done with her, I go to my car and try to reach my lunch box for something to eat.”

His lunch box was in his suitcase. As he grabbed it, he said he saw someone in the front of his car. Alkhaldi said that person jumped into a Kia Soul parked in front of him and sped away.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video at the airport.

His car had been searched and the $17,000 in his center console was gone.

“(Police) told me: ‘You should close and lock your car before you leave,'” Alkhaldi said. “I told them, ‘I’m walking 30 feet back and forth.’ Do I have to lock my car to do this? I’ve been doing this for 30 years. This is the first time this has happened to me.”

Alkhaldi moved to America from Jordan more than two decades ago to give his family a better life.

“I saw some of my (neighbors). They come to this country and they are successful and they have turned their family life upside down,” explained Alkhaldi.

The money he stole was to go to his wife in Jordan, who had just had their baby. The rest belonged to a friend who felt unsafe where he lived and entrusted Alkhaldi to keep it for him. Now the limousine driver has to refund it.

“We flew all the way of 19 hours because we believe in this country, because we believe this is the land of opportunity,” Alkhaldi said. “We are here to make a living. We’re here to pay taxes. We pay taxes.”

Alkhaldi admitted he cried after the money was taken from him but said he will work to earn it back. Now he’s asking the Houston police to find the suspects.

“I just need your help if you can,” Alkhaldi said. “I don’t need any financial help. I don’t need financial help. Do not get me wrong. I just need help catching these people.”

Houston police said they were aware of the case and would continue the investigation.

A GoFundMe account was set up for Alkhaldi after the community reached out to help him.
