Houston COVID threat level today: Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo lowers the level to yellow

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – This could be another positive sign that things are going in the right direction.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced Thursday morning that she was again lowering the county’s COVID-19 threat level, this time from orange to amber, as positive cases and hospitalizations for Omicron variant infections decline.

Yellow, which is also Level 3, means there is a controlled level of COVID-19 in Harris County, meaning there is a further proven reduction in transmission and the local health system is at good capacity, according to officials.

Anyone who is not vaccinated should continue to wear a mask and social distancing, while vaccinated individuals should mask or physically distance when required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territory law, including at local businesses or at work.

“My hope is that we are at a permanent tipping point of this pandemic,” Hidalgo said in a press release Thursday. “But we haven’t yet had a wave where our hospitals aren’t overwhelmed, so we must tread carefully before declaring victory over this virus.”

This is the second time in two weeks that Hidalgo has lowered the COVID threat level.

On February 24, it lowered the level from red, the most severe, to orange, meaning there were still significant and uncontrolled levels of virus in the region.

Hidalgo had raised the level to red when the Omicron wave hit Harris County hard in January.

The reduced threat level in late February came four days before the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo returned after a two-year absence due to the pandemic.

This year, the rodeo, which draws millions of people during the roughly three-week event, runs until March 20.
