House of the Dragons producer says depicting sexual violence is not “off the table”.

house of the dragon Executive producer and writer Sara Hess refused to rule out sexual violence in the future of the show after saying the first season would not portray her.

Conversations surrounding the show and sexual violence were brewed from the offset as with its predecessor game of Thrones famously drew criticism for his depictions of rape and abuse.

“I want to be clear that we don’t depict sexual violence on the show,” Hess said vanity fair in August. “We are treating a case off-screen and instead showing the aftermath and impact on the victim and the perpetrator’s mother.”

At a performance on The Official Game of Thrones Podcast: House of Dragons On Monday (September 19) Hess declared that, if necessary, sexual violence would “not shy away”.

“I want to be clear that I didn’t say we will never depict sexual violence,” she said.

“I’m not saying we are. I do not know. There will hopefully be more seasons of this show, so it’s not off the table.

Hess continued, “We didn’t feel the need to include things that weren’t in the book. It’s definitely a part of the world and something we won’t shy away from if the need arises, but I think a lot of thought needs to be put into how it’s portrayed. There’s also a more nuanced point to make, I don’t think you have to be raped to be oppressed and traumatized. I’m more interested in the more subtle ways it plays out.”

Alicent Hightower actress Emily Carey, who was just 17 when she was cast on the show, recently opened up about her nerves before filming a sex scene for the show.

Alicent is shown having sex with King Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine, who is 30 years Carey’s senior.

“It scared me because at that point I hadn’t met Paddy … and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and I, I was a little bit worried,” Carey said, before adding , that the “ amazing intimacy coordinator allowed her to be comfortable on set.
