Hochul failed to get NY needed criminal corrections

Faced with a legislative leadership that flatly refused to make any of the vital fixes to New York insane criminal justice reforms, Governor Kathy Hochul belatedly decided to ask for some small changes as her price Approval for a bloated national budget. She ended up getting a few small ones and called that a win.

It’s a great loss for the average New Yorker, especially for the (overwhelming minority) victims of crime.

Any other state, even those that have eliminates bail, at the very least, judges are having clearly dangerous suspects sent to jail. Not New York quiet.

Yes, Hochul has a few other gun charges that are eligible for bail or jail. But it’s not a crime that many people get arrested for in the first place. And judges will be able to jail serial shoplifters (for which retailers will be very grateful) but not chronic offenders of almost every other crime.

Hate criminals now also risk jail, but that’s another small category of arrestees.

The changes to the investigative rules are minimal, and fall short of nearly enough to reduce the maniacal paperwork that’s forcing prosecutors across the state to drop cases (and coerce prosecutors with bleeding prosecutorial staff). State attorneys’ offices want $200 million a year to handle this extra effort; the budget throws them about $50 million (out of billions in new spending).

In short, the legislature has made a few tiny concessions and will now refuse to do more unless voters revolt.

Hochul had a weak hand: she’s facing an “accidental governor”. left-dominated supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature. So she decided to play an inside game, even publicly supporting the absurd claim that the “reforms” of recent years had nothing to do with New York’s rising crime rate because she didn’t want to upset her insane “negotiators.”

It is clear that the state is not getting the changes it needs – the ones that are publicly overwhelmingly supports it — until it has a governor willing to denounce the utter insanity of his lawmakers and withhold the budget for it Months when it is necessary to bash legislature leaders every day for their pro-crime stance and incite open revolt among the grassroots who acknowledge the madness.

New York needs a fighter or he’ll go down the toilet.
