Hikaru Utada, the world-renowned artist behind one of Kingdom Hearts’ biggest songs, performed at the legendary festival.
Kingdom Hearts IV surprised the internet when Square Enix released a trailer for the upcoming game on April 10th, 2022. Fans of the Disney/Square crossover franchise, which served as the sequel to the third installment in the series, were thrilled to see the return of Sora, Donald and Goofy as they continue where the narrative last left off.
Aside from the complex story and its endearing characters, Kingdom Hearts has also become a fan favorite for its OST, most notably Hikaru Utada’s contributions.
And with a surprise Coachella performance from the aforementioned singer, the Kingdom Hearts fandom was treated to another treat.
Hikaru Utada performs at Coachella
Hikaru Utada made his debut at the legendary Coachella Festival on April 17, 2022, taking the Kingdom Hearts signal to the desert. They blessed the crowd with a performance of Simple and Clean from Kingdom Hearts 1.
In an almost angelic performance, the singer effortlessly belted out the catchy song; the smoke and wind worked together to create a truly ethereal moment.
Viewers in the video posted by the co-founder of Kinda Funny Games Tim Gettys is delighted with the performance as the cheers become deafening as she gets them through the tune.

It’s incredible to see Utada being invited onto a stage as big as life like the Coachella Music Festival, especially since they’ve amassed so many fans beyond video games over the course of their long career.

But Simple and Clean isn’t the only song they sang while at Coachella. There the Japanese singers also took the time to perform their first singles “Automatic” and “First Love”, which were released in 1998.
With Kingdom Hearts 4 on the horizon, it will be interesting to see where Utada takes the theme song for the next arc in the franchise. We can hardly wait.
