High-risk sex offender found dead in New York psychiatric hospital, suspected murder: cops

A high-risk sex offender died at a Brooklyn psychiatric facility this week – and authorities believe he may have been killed in a fight with a fellow patient, police officers said on Friday.

Level 3 offender Shakim Devega, 28, was found unconscious and unresponsive – with trauma to his neck – at the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center on Clarkson Avenue near Albany Avenue in Crown Heights Tuesday around 11:45 p.m the police with.

Investigators believe he was involved in an argument with another man who was also at the facility, police officers said.

He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center, authorities said.

While the city coroner’s office has not made an official decision on the manner of death, police say the office found neck fractures and signs of third-party negligence.

The NYPD is investigating the case as a homicide.

According to the state sex offender registry, Devega sexually abused a 6-year-old boy in 2018.
