Flashy Brooklyn Bishop Lamor Whitehead said Monday he believes even the NYPD believes he orchestrated the armed robbery, in which he stole more than $1 million worth of jewelry during a live-streamed sermon .
Whitehead made the claim at a news conference following another live-streaming incident on Sunday, in which he got into an argument with a woman that appeared to crash his service.
“I don’t think the NYPD feels like I’ve been robbed,” said Whitehead – who wore a huge gold and diamond necklace, ruby ring, Fendi-embellished sweater and Fendi shoes as he addressed the press in a white Rolls Royce Cabriolet with orange interior rolled in front of the 69th district of Brooklyn.
“I think they feel like I orchestrated this whole robbery,” he said. “And I heard that from the NYPD, and I won’t name names.
“What’s been going around in the NYPD is, ‘Bishop Whitehead orchestrated this robbery. They staged it.’
“So why should they respect me and my church if they think I’m a criminal?” he said, fuming against being taken into custody over Sunday’s riot in which the woman was involved.
“I’m a black man, so I’m automatically a criminal, right?” said Whitehead, who was released and not charged in Sunday’s incident while the woman faces rape, including trespassing.
“So they go through the NYPD – and it’s verified – they think I went under [the robbery] high. So until they see, I guess these criminals, if they get caught and they see that they’ve been arrested and I had nothing to do with it, I want to apologize because the NYPD and the media set up a platform for that believe that I am not a victim. I’m a villain because I’m African American.”
Whitehead, who was in jail on identity theft and grand larceny charges, was robbed during a live-streamed church service in July – with the crooks stealing more than $1 million worth of jewelry in the camera caper, police and the bishop said at the time.
Critics have said his lavish lifestyle has made him a prime target for trouble, while some people have questioned whether the robbery was even real. The bishop has denied having anything to do with the crime.
