Heavy I-95 traffic in Virginia leaves hundreds of drivers stranded for hours

WOODFORD, Virginia – An icy traffic nightmare continues in Virginia following Monday’s winter storm.

Hundreds of drivers were stuck on I-95 between Washington, DC and Richmond for hours.

The incident happened after six tractor-trailers crashed in heavy snow and ice, blocking all lanes.

Videos and photos posted on social media show the interstate turned into a virtual parking lot.

Our ABC station in Washington, DC reported many of them were forced to spend the night in their cars, some trapped for more than 12 hours, because they couldn’t make it through the snow and downed trees.

Parts of the interstate remained closed while plows and snow trucks were on the scene, according to the state’s Department of Transportation.
