When Nicks first met Petty she was a huge fan of his music and he wasn’t sure what to think of her. He admitted he wasn’t very welcoming at first, so Nicks turned to Petty’s wife for help.
“Stevie worked on Jane,” Petty said, according to the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis.

“I said, ‘Let’s just write some songs. I don’t write songs with anyone, and neither do you. Let’s write some,’” Nicks explained. “He said, ‘Well, okay. Perhaps.'”
She gathered some supplies and made plans to write with him for long days.
“I went home and I thought, I’ll go there every day until 6 a.m. and we’ll write,” she said. “The next day I arrive with my grocery bags, Hershey’s chocolate syrup, instant coffee and the kind of milk I like. He’s looking at me like I’m crazy.”
Petty was appalled that Nicks would come to his house with so many supplies.
“I’m like, ‘I’ll be here, so I need my supplies,'” she explained. “He says, ‘Your supplies?’ I say, ‘Supplies! Like camping.” I’ll never forget the look on his face. So I said, ‘Okay, so we’re not going to write songs together. But I will come visit you and keep in touch.’”
Stevie Nicks said she will never fully recover from Tom Petty’s death
When Petty died in 2017, Nicks was heartbroken. She said she was struggling to recover from the loss.
“Losing Tom Petty almost broke my heart,” she said per HuffPost. “Not only was he a good man to go down the river with, as Johnny Cash said, he was a great father and a great friend. He was one of my best friends. My heart will never get over it.”
