Hawkeye directors discuss bringing [SPOILER] into the MCU

Marvel nothing better than linking different parts of the universe and its new Hawk Eye may be the poster child for this. Each episode seems to make connections. First, we meet Echo (Alaqua Cox), who has a spin-off series planned. Then Yelena (Florence Pugh) joined, recently from the movie Black Widow. And finally, in the most recent episode, we saw…

Well, maybe I should stop to say yes SPOILERS beyond this point. I’ll just give you a moment to consider.

Okay, second ending: the most recent episode of the show ended with the revelation that Kate Bishop’s mother was working for none other than the Kingpin, a powerful crime boss who was having affairs with several brothers. Marvel heroes in the comics for many years. Furthermore, he is being played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who also played him in the Netflix show Daredevil.

Daredevil and its sisters show – Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and such – have been in limbo since Netflix canceled them. Are they part of the MCU? Are they not? Kingpin’s presence in Hawk Eye seem to confirm that it is indeed them!

Hawk Eye directors explain their take on Kingpin

Amber Templemore-Finlayson and Katie Ellwood, a group of directors believed to be Bert & Bertie, directed the episode. They talked to Polygon about the inclusion of this fan-favorite character. “It’s exciting for us as well as the fans, knowing what everyone else is going to feel,” Ellwood said. “It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, these worlds can now come together, and having this extra layer can go into the MCU that was once separate.'”

At the same time, Bert & Bertie can portray the character however they want, even though he only appears for a second right at the end of their episode. They also direct next week’s finale, so hopefully we’ll see more of their interpretation after that.

“I think you just respect the character and his place in the universe,” said Templemore-Finlayson. “So when the Kingpin came, he was big, you know? He’s big. As the story goes, he’s then in a more difficult place, but he’s stepped in as his adult self, with his big hands. In that photo you see him in his iconic suit. So how to shoot him comes from the character’s place, instead of us trying to match our universe to anything from the past.”

And of course, this could just be the beginning of a fantastical Marvel thriller. Will Krysten Ritter return as Jessica Jones? Will Mike Colter play Luke Cage? Finn Jones as Iron Fist? Marvel rarely leaves a stone unturned, so I wouldn’t be surprised by that.
