The hateful messages led to an investigation by the Houston Police Department.
Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows someone in a pickup truck dumping the packages during the night hours.
Mark Toubin is a member of the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights organization fighting for justice for all people. He said this type of extremist propaganda is on the rise in the greater Houston area.
Toubin encourages anyone involved in hate crime to report it to law enforcement and on her website. Toubin said the perpetrators wanted to stir up outrage to raise money on extremist platforms.
“Unfortunately this has been much more of an issue in the last three months,” said Toubin. “For every single flyer that was thrown from a car or truck into someone’s driveway without their asking. I think that sends the best message that when an act of hate leads to an act of good, hate will not prevail.”
Ken Anderson and his wife, Andreane Vachon, got the news. They said it felt threatening and worried them. Anderson spoke directly to the person or persons responsible.
“I feel sorry for her,” Anderson said. “It’s such a burden to carry so much hate.”
The Houston Police Department released the following statement to ABC13.
“The Houston Police Department is aware of the flyers carrying divisive messages and propaganda that were distributed in various neighborhoods this weekend. We take this type of incident very seriously and are fully investigating the matter. As always, our partnerships and collaborations with all of our communities in our city are important to us. We are asking anyone with information about this or similar incidents to contact the police immediately so that the incident can be thoroughly investigated.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks hate groups and has located at least seven hate groups operating in the greater Houston area.
