Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, a top House Democrat, backed Gov. Kathy Hochul’s gubernatorial bid on Sunday, adding to her long list of approvals from New York lawmakers.
Jeffries – a front-runner who is set to replace House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when she leaves Congress – said Hochul has been “in full swing” since he replaced the disgraced ex-government. Andrew Cuomo in August.
“Governor Hochul has proven to be a tireless advocate for all New Yorkers and is committed to addressing the needs of working families,” he said in a press release. “From creating good-paying jobs to keeping our communities safe to getting our schools back online, Governor Hochul has done everything to build a New York that leaves no one behind.”
“She is the right choice for governor and I am proud to support her for a full term,” added Jeffries, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
Hochul — who announced shortly before taking office that she would seek a full term as the state’s chief executive — hailed Jeffries’ endorsement ahead of the Democratic primary in June.
“I am honored to be endorsed by Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, whose leadership in Congress has benefited families across New York and the nation,” she said in a prepared statement.
“Hakeem has a proven track record of getting things done and advocating policies that make his district a better place to live, work and raise a family,” the governor added. “I am grateful for Congressman Jeffries’ support and look forward to building on our progress to deliver results for New Yorkers.”
Several other Democratic members of the New York City congressional delegation have supported Hochul, as Cuomo has indicated both publicly and privately that he is considering launching a protracted attempt to oust her.
On Thursday, Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx) endorsed the incumbent governor, praising her “proven record fighting for New Yorkers,” a day after Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-Upper Manhattan) did, praising her “work ethic.” , determination and commitment.”
Queens Democratic Party leader Gregory Meeks and Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-Upper West Side) recently endorsed Hochul.
In the Democratic primary, Hochul currently faces a field that includes public attorney Jumaane Williams on her left and Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi on her right.
Hochul has a comfortable lead in most polls, although a recent Emerson College poll shows the scandal-ridden Cuomo would fall just 4 points behind his former running mate should he enter the Democratic primary race.
In November’s general election, Hochul is likely to face Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Long Island), who is set to run in June against a slew of Republican primary candidates including Andrew Giuliani, son of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and GOP businessman and former State Examiner Candidate Harry Wilson.
