Gunman killed in hours-long skirmish with Antioch police

A man who opened fire with an assault rifle in a residential San Francisco Bay area was shot dead by police Friday after a long stretch of hours, authorities said. Police said the gunman opened fire on cars and houses. The man also shot down a police drone before barricading himself in the house, police said. At around 7 p.m., the gunman appeared to set fire to inside a garage and then left as flames engulfed the house, police said. His name was later shot by SWAT officers and died at the scene, police said.

A man who opened fire with a rifle in the vicinity of the San Francisco Bay was shot dead by police Friday after an hour-long standoff, authorities said.

Reports of shots sent officers to a home in Antioch around 1 p.m., where they saw the gunman open fire on cars and homes, authorities said.

The man also shot down a police drone before barricading himself in his home, police said.

Police said officers cordoned off some streets, evacuated neighbors and tried to contact the gunman for several hours while he continued to open fire.

At around 7 p.m., the gunman showed up to set fire to the inside of a garage and left as flames engulfed the house. Police said he was later shot by SWAT officers and died at the scene.

His name was not immediately released.

There were no immediate words about what prompted the man to open fire.
