Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) sought to reduce Florida’s dependence on the federal government by revitalizing the civilian population during World War II.

In a press conference Thursday, DeSantis proposed allocating $3.5 million of its budget to re-establish the Florida State Guard. Unlike the Florida National Guard, the FSG will only respond to the governor. Additionally, there will be no federal deployment, federal mandate, or federal funding.

“The Florida State Guard will operate as a civilian volunteer force capable of assisting the National Guard during state-specific emergencies. This funding will support training, necessary equipment, and other support functions for up to 200 members who can assist in responding to hurricanes, natural disasters, and other emergencies. state. DeSantis’ proposal comes after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered all members of the National Guard and Reserve to be vaccinated earlier this week. If they refuse, they may lose their salary.

In the meantime, if the FSG is established, Florida will become the 23rd active State Guard in the nation.
