GOP slams Pelosi for saying Thomas doesn’t belong with SCOTUS

Republicans have blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for saying Thursday that Clarence Thomas — the only black member of the Supreme Court — should never have gotten the job.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) was asked by a reporter at a Capitol news conference if 73-year-old Thomas should resign for not withdrawing from the 2020 election cases, while his wife Ginni made allegations that President Biden cheated on the helped win.
“I don’t think he should ever be appointed,” Pelosi replied.
The Speaker of the House went on to say that Ginni Thomas, who attended a rally near the White House leading up to last year’s Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, was “a recognized and proud coup contributor to our country,” and that justice “should” weigh this in deciding whether to withdraw from cases.
Many Republicans responded by noting that Democrats blew up their recent questioning of President Biden’s pending Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, who would become only the third black judge in the court’s history — and the first black woman.
Abigail Marone, press secretary for Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who presided over the Senate Judiciary Committee’s grilling of Jackson, tweeted“But I have been reliably informed that it is racist to oppose a black SCOTUS candidate…”

Harrison Fields, press secretary for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), noted that a progressive commentator claimed critics of Jackson had threatened her safety by objecting to her sentencing decisions in child pornography cases.
“We need MORE Clarence Thomas and fewer KBJs,” wrote Fields, who is black.
The Republican staff on the House Judiciary Committee tweeted, “Pelosi should never have been a speaker and won’t be for much longer. Stand with Justice Thomas!”

Political commentator Guy Benson also took a swipe at Pelosi, To write, “This racist white woman seriously jeopardizes the life of a strong black man. (Am I doing this right?)”
Jackson is expected to be confirmed by a largely party-internal vote to replace retired Justice Stephen Breyer. Thomas was confirmed in the position for life in 1991 after hearings to confirm the bruises focused on allegations of sexual harassment made by his former subordinate, Anita Hill.
