Golden Globes will return in 2023 amid a controversial past

The Golden Globes are coming back to NBC — for now.

The network signed a one-year deal with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that hosts the show, to broadcast live from Beverly Hills on January 10.

This is a Tuesday — a departure from the show’s traditional Sunday spot.

The HFPA recently added 103 new voters to its ranks, marking the first time internationally resident voters have been added to the voter pool. The diverse electoral body is now represented by 62 different countries around the world.

Combined with current HFPA membership, the entire Golden Globe Awards voting body is now 52% Female, 51.5% Racially and Ethnicly diverse, 19.5% Latino, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern.

This comes after NBC halted airing of the 2022 awards show due to a lack of diversity within the HFPA as well as alleged ethical misconduct.

Notably, the 87-strong organization lacked a proportionate number of black members among Los Angeles-based “international” journalists.

In February 2021, Tom Cruise actually returned his three Golden Globes after the LA Times exposé of the HFPA: The newspaper reported that the group had zero black members and a poor track record of nominating actors and directors of color. Former President Philip Berk has been accused of racism and sexual assault. The HFPA has been involved in making dubious payments to members that could get in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service. And prominent publicists have complained of sleazy behavior at actor junkets.

But that has reportedly changed.

“We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to continual change and look forward to welcoming the Golden Globes back to NBC on their landmark 80th anniversary Anniversary in January 2023,” Frances Berwick, chair of Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement Tuesday.

Helen Hoehne, President of the HFPA, added: “The HFPA remains committed to important changes and supportive programs that prioritize diversity, inclusion and transparency. See you on January 10th!”

The Golden Globes will take place on January 10, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC and stream on Peacock.
