Girl packing carrots, apples into boxes during food bank stop

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden packed carrots and apples into food boxes for the hungry and chatted with volunteers Sunday at a food bank as part of a Martin Luther Day King, Jr.

The couple traveled about half an hour from their home in Wilmington, Delaware, to Philabundance, a Philadelphia famine relief organization that serves about 140,000 people a week in the Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey regions. Before heading to the warehouse floor, where a conveyor belt carries cardboard boxes filled with donated food, Biden said the child tax credit needs to be extended.

The traditional day of service is a holiday, Monday, but a bad winter storm is heading for the area and events have been rescheduled around the area.

The monthly credits are part of Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package – and the president has proposed extending them for another year as part of a separate measure focused on economic and social programs. The extra money is used by families to buy food and other supplies.

But Senator Joe Manchin, DW.Va., opposes the credit expansion out of concern that the money will discourage people from working and that any additional federal spending will fuel inflation which climbed to a near 40-year high.

“The child tax credit is really helpful. We had to refresh it,” Biden said.

They stepped onto the warehouse floor as Angie Stone’s “Wish I Did Don’t Miss You” played softly, put on some gloves, and got to work. Jill Biden wore a Philadelphia Eagles t-shirt underneath her jacket during a nod during the team’s playoff game Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Biden chatted with volunteers, including a man standing near a crate of macaroni and cheese, who told the president his daughter was a teacher. Biden talked about the first lady’s teaching career and then asked the man for his daughter’s phone number and said he would give her a ring.

Food boxes contain condiments, fruits, vegetables, noodles, tea and juice boxes along with peanut butter and chickpeas.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., said the Senate would introduce the voting rights legislation on Tuesday, missing a deadline he initially set for action on Monday, which is Day MLK. Biden spoke strongly of the need to pass legislation, citing modern concerns about electoral subversion and increasing voting restrictions in states with the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Biden last week said he was in favor of changing Senate rules to allow a slim Democratic majority to pass the bid, though he later acknowledged the uncertainty that it could pass Congress. this year following objections from Manchin and Senator Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.
