Most movie franchises make a single hit followed by sequels. That is not the case with ghostbusters. The original 1984 film became one of the biggest hits of the decade. However, the franchise has since traveled a rocky road that includes a direct sequel, a reboot, and a “legacyquel.” fans continue to debate the merits of each ghostbusters Movie. But how do they compare to each other? Let’s take a closer look.
4) “Ghostbusters II” (1989)
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson proved to be one of moviegoers’ favorite screen crews in the original film. But this sequel — released five years later — falls short in almost every way. Despite the return of the main cast and director Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters II doesn’t do enough to stand out.
Sure, Vigo the Carpathian is a villain to remember. And Peter MacNicol is over the top fun as Janosz. However, this sequel feels too much like a toned-down version of its predecessor, right down to the oversized figure making its way through the streets of New York City. As far as franchise follow-ups go, Ghostbusters II largely proven what not to do.
3) “Ghostbusters” (2016)
After decades of talk Ghostbusters IIIany hope of this project coming to fruition was seemingly dashed after Ramis died in 2014. Instead, Sony went with Paul Feig (bridesmaids) on the director’s chair. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones then formed a whole new team.
And the Internet – as is often the case – reacted with very different reactions. Many claimed Feig and Company ruined the franchise. While the film reimagines the idea of a team of mostly scientists battling ghosts in New York, it also offers funny performances, loads of heart and some really exciting moments.

2) “Ghostbusters: Life After Death” (2021)
Five years after Feig’s reboot, fans were split, the beloved Ecto-1 went in the opposite direction. Jason Reitman – son of Ivan Reitman from the original film – is directing a “Legacyquel” that picks up the story of the original film decades later. Egon’s (Ramis) granddaughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) has a story that everything revolves around Farewell to Ramis.
For sure, Ghostbusters: Life After Death ultimately ties too closely to the story of the first film for some fans. But Grace’s performance makes the film stand out, and the film acts as the long-awaited final chapter in the original team’s story. Hopefully fans and the franchise itself can move on to something new in the announced sequel to this film.
1) “Ghostbusters” (1984)
The classic comedy that started it all still reigns supreme. It is difficult to determine what makes ghostbusters work so well. There’s the big one Saturday night live Energy among the performers, including SNL Alum Murray and Aykroyd. And there’s the rowdy entrepreneurial spirit in the story of four New Yorkers thrown into an extraordinary industry.
But the real reason ghostbusters As popular as ever is the distinctive combination of paranormal sci-fi activity and sharp comedy. Few films since – with 1997’s Men in Black being perhaps the closest – have achieved that, including the subsequent entries. Decades later, in 1984 ghostbusters makes the fans feel good.
