George RR Martin is skipping ‘House of the Dragon’ due to COVID

The father of dragons himself, George RR Martin, was forced to miss his own premiere after testing positive for COVID-19.

Martin, 73, was scheduled to attend the Los Angeles premiere of House of the Dragon on Wednesday but had to cancel

The fantasy writer co-created and executive produced the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon and is the brains behind the iconic HBO franchise.

HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys delivered a message from Martin to viewers and his fans at the red carpet screening yesterday.

It’s possible Martin contracted the coronavirus from last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, USA Today reported.

“I wanted to start today by introducing George RR Martin and telling you how great it is to have George on our journey,” Bloys told the audience at the premiere. “Unfortunately George got COVID at Comic-Con so he’s not here. I think he’s feeling fine, so no need to worry.”

“I wanted to tell you what a joy it is and how fortunate we are to have the architect of this world with us on this journey,” Bloys said. “He was fantastic.”

The New Jersey native also revealed the “unfortunate announcement” in one tweet entitled “Travel Updates”.

Martin explained he was quarantined at a Los Angeles hotel after three positive tests.

He added that he only had a few mild symptoms, “runny nose, and I cough every now and then”.

“I’m being well taken care of and I’m on the meds and should be fine,” he continued. “I thank each of you who are worried about me. I’ll be back as soon as possible.”

Based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prequel set 200 years before Game of Thrones. It tells the story of House Targaryen and its downfall.

The series arrives August 21 on HBO Max and stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

Speaking about the series during the July 23 panel at the comic convention, Martin remarked, “There certainly is evil. The most interesting characters are gray characters. … All of these characters have good and bad in them, and it’s about the choices they make.”
