Singer Macy Gray has plunged into the transgender debate, telling Piers Morgan that to be a woman you have to be born with “breasts” and a “vagina”.
“Just because you change your parts doesn’t make you a woman,” crooner Morgan said on his TalkTV program.
The host noted that public figures are often wary of being open on the controversial issue for fear of backlash.
Gray, 54, agreed, defining a woman as “people with breasts.”
“How about you start there,” she said. “And have a vagina.”
The singer made it clear that she supports transgender rights – but drew the line when it came to athletic competitions.
“If you want me to call you ‘her,’ I will,” she said. “Because you want to, but just because I call you ‘she’ and just because you’ve had surgery doesn’t make you a woman.”
She also supported author JK Rowling, who has been criticized for her outspoken views on transgender issues.
“I don’t think you should be called transphobic just because you don’t agree with it…” she said. “There’s a lot of judgment and stones thrown at people just for saying what it is. You know what I mean?”
Being a woman, Gray said, requires more than just medical procedures.
“A woman goes through a completely unique experience and surgery, and finding yourself doesn’t change that,” she said. “Being a little girl is a whole epic book, you know? You can’t have this just because you want to be a woman.”
