island of love Candidates are flirtatious, but they’re hardly known for being shy. Nonetheless, Gemma Owen, daughter of Michael Owen, has yet to announce to the rest of the cast that her father is the famous English footballer.
The ITV2 series returned on Monday (6 June) with a new cast of contestants entering the Spanish villa hoping to find romance with a side of summer fame.
But one of the candidates is already famous, at least by association. And while Gemma hasn’t publicly declared her athletic parentage, she did drop a few clues.
The first came early when Gemma, a dressage rider, described her life away from the mansion to fellow contestant Liam LLewelyn.
“I have a feeling you have a big house,” replies Gemma’s audience-assigned love interest when he finds out she keeps a dozen horses. The horses don’t live, of course in the house, but Liam’s important point is left unaddressed.
Next, 19-year-old Liam, who is just getting his Masters in Strength and Conditioning, talks about his career as an athlete. When she’s done asking him what level of professional football he’s reached before he quits, Liam becomes suspicious. He suspects Gemma’s ex-boyfriend might be a footballer. So close!
In a separate conversation, Gemma dropped that her last name was ‘Owen’. Being a common UK surname, the cast can’t be faulted for not putting the dots together, but the dramatic tension is building.
And during Thursday night’s (June 9) episode, when she assured football fan Luca Bish that he was the guy she would take home to meet her family, Gemma was as close as she’d ever been to getting the blurting out her father’s name. “He appreciates a man who is interested in sports,” she said of her father, who also owns racehorses. “I overheard you talking about football and racing.”
Finally, on a June 30 episode, one of the bombshells asked Gemma directly about her father. But even Antigoni, who is relatively new at the villa, didn’t mention Michael Owen by name.

“Sorry if I sound ignorant but your father is quite famous and well known, he played for England right?” asked Antigoni as the girls got ready for the evening events.
Ekin-Su, who was listening nearby, then joined the chat by asking Gemma if she knew David Beckham’s sons. Gemma admitted she went to kindergarten with them but gave no further details.
Gemma spoke directly into the camera at the series premiere and gave a little glimpse into life as the daughter of the former Liverpool great. “My dad has an opinion on who I date,” she said at the season opener.
