Director Gaspar Noé has harshly condemned Marvel films, questioning whether they make audiences “stupid.”
The acclaimed Franco-Argentinian filmmaker – best known for his 2002 film Irreversible with Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel – spoke about current cinema in a new interview with The Independent.
Noé said: “It’s like asking, did Hitler create Nazi Germany or did Nazi Germany create Hitler?
“Do you think the Marvel movies are making Americans dumb or is all of America getting so dumb that they need dumb movies like this to make their point?”
Noé is known as a controversial filmmaker who was criticized for depicting a rape scene lasting over 10 minutes in his film Irreversible.
Elsewhere in the interview, Noé spoke about the recent success of his 2015 film lovewhich drew a huge audience on Netflix when it was added to the streaming giant in 2020.
Noé said the film has been successful during lockdown “because the audience is made up of people who need to masturbate”. love contains many scenes of non-simulated sex.
Noé isn’t the first filmmaker to criticize superhero films, either The Godfather Director Francis Ford Coppola called them “despicable”.
Previously, Martin Scorsese said he “tried” to watch movies from the MCU but later decided they were “not cinema.” He compared them to “theme parks” instead.

“It’s not the cinema of people trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being,” Scorsese said.
