We got back to Iceland with a shaken Clayton after he sent Susie home after their dramatic split. He was sitting alone in a church with a choir singing just for him…why? No one knows, but he’s The Bachelor, he’s confused (his words) and he’s searching in his heart for answers. “I’m so broken,” he cried. Jesse Palmer met him outside on a park bench to chat, and he told Clayton, “That was crazy.” Clayton opened up about how devastated he was and how heartbroken he was left behind by Susie. Can Jesse talk sense into this man? He laid everything out for Clayton and told him that Gabby and Rachel were expecting a proposal and would meet his parents. Clayton said he plans to tell the two everything and be honest to see if they feel the same as Susie. Jesse let him play it both ways, they could go, they could stay. “I think you have some things to think about,” Jesse said. That’s putting it mildly.
Rose Ceremony from Hell
Poor Gabby and Rachel. They were already nervous about the rose ceremony and had no idea what they were getting themselves into. “I hope he’s figured out exactly what he wants and that it’s me,” Gabby said as she walked inside. I’m sorry Gabby, that’s not what you’re hoping for. As Gabby and Rachel stood there waiting for Clayton, they realized that Susie wasn’t there. They were hoping they would be the last two, and they are, but there’s an elephant in the room. Clayton tells them that Susie is gone and that he is in pieces. He explained what Susie said to him and how it made him feel. Clayton reveals that he loves all three and has slept with both of them. Rachel looked around in disbelief and anger as Gabby immediately burst into tears. Clayton tells them he thinks his wife is one of them, but he doesn’t know yet, and he’s not trying to prank either of them. He told them they could ask him questions and do whatever they wanted to do and Rachel asked for a second and walked away.
Rachel sat down on the steps outside and her screams echoed through the hall. Gabby also walked down a hallway crying and saying she doesn’t want to make it to the end if it’s meant to be. Clayton just stood there by himself while her screams continued to echo through the building. It was really awful.
Rachel said she couldn’t breathe and unbuttoned the neckline of her dress. Gabby said she didn’t know what to do. “Maybe it’s easier to just leave.” Jesse spoke to Clayton while the women cried in the background. “It’s killing me to see her like that,” Clayton said. “It happened because I opened up and became vulnerable.” “You just hurt,” Jesse said.
Gabby went to Clayton first and said, “That’s so much.” Clayton tried to reassure her that his feelings were real and that he was only scared about what had happened to Susie. She asked him to explain everything again, brushing off some of the parts she didn’t want to hear again. Gabby said she didn’t think his “relationship exploration” should have included definitive love. She couldn’t understand how he could say he loved them all and then possibly send them home. He said that he “loves the one he chooses the most.” “Why wouldn’t you just save it?” Gabby said. Clayton said he just wanted to express how he really feels. Gabby said a curse and walked away. “I don’t think he’s fair right now,” she said. “Love is not measured, it cannot be measured.” “I don’t want to be loved the most, I just want to be loved for who I am,” Gabby added.
Rachel said she was heartbroken because it was like his words meant nothing. She went to find Clayton and they sat down to talk about how his words affected them. He tried to explain that the love he feels for each of them is different. “I feel like my heart is breaking,” she said as she sobbed into him. She never would have thought, worst case scenario, that she felt like he could sympathize with three people. “I feel like it’s worth fighting for. I love you, I do,” Clayton said. He told Rachel that his family is there and he wants her to meet them. She hugged him and walked away, still not knowing what to do.
The rose ceremony continues
Oh wait, somehow the producers convinced the women to be there for this “rose ceremony from hell.” Clayton again apologized to both of them, reminding them that they can choose not to accept the rose if they feel they are unable to do so. He called Rachel’s name first and offered her the rose, and she said, “I will.” Gabby stood there unhappily as Clayton then called her name. Gabby said, “I can’t, I’m sorry.” He said, “Okay.” Then she asked him if he wanted to take her out. Rachel gasped quietly, wondering if he’d ended up with her by accident or if she really was the one for him. “I’m not in the business of competing for love with anyone,” she said. But she realizes this show is right? But she’s right about her feelings. Clayton made one last request for her, saying he was speaking from his heart. Gabby asked him to just say he was sorry. He tried to persuade her to stay, but would not give her any assurances. Shockingly, she walked back into the room with Rachel and then Clayton offered her the rose again! She accepted the rose, “Yes.” Gabby and Rachel’s eyes were so swollen from crying! “I fight because I care,” Clayton said.
Bachelor Nation Commentary
On the live show, Jesse brought Clare, Nick and Michelle down to talk about Clayton’s situation. Nick noted that Clayton left out the most important detail: “He never told them he told Susie he loved her the most.” Clare didn’t think Clayton was handling it well. Michelle said that being vulnerable is very powerful, but in a relationship you have to “be careful with it” and both sides have to make the same effort.
Clayton’s family arrives in Iceland
The next day, Clayton’s brothers and parents were in Iceland and very excited to see him and learn all about his journey. Boy, were they expecting a shock. He told his family all the sordid details. He spoke about Susie leaving, with Clayton’s father saying, “Sounds reasonable.” “They have a right to be mad at you,” he added. His dad giggled when he heard it all and said, “I think you screwed up the pooch.” Clayton asked his parents to ask them the tough questions while also taking it easy on them because they’ve been through a lot. His mother said Gabby was hard to talk to because it was like she was a consolation prize, and Clayton said that neither Gabby nor Rachel were a consolation prize and either could become her daughter-in-law.
Gabby meets Clayton’s parents
Gabby walked in so graciously bringing gifts and thanking them so much they traveled halfway across the world to meet them (and Rachel of course). His mother tried to reassure Gabby that her son was a great guy and “a jewel”. She told his mother that she just wanted to see the relationship through. Clayton’s dad asked her how she was, and when Gabby said she was fine, he said, “Are you okay?” His dad has told her how much he respects her and the choices she’s made so far. He seems such a nice dad! Gabby said she didn’t want his parents to think less of him. How cute is she?! Gabby ended the day by telling Clayton that she really loves him.
Rachel meets Clayton’s parents
Rachel was next to meet Clayton’s family. She told his mother that the rose ceremony was really tough, but she’s still in love with Clayton. Rachel said she stayed because she didn’t want to have any future regrets and wanted to give everything to her relationship. Rachel even said that if Clayton proposed to her, she would accept it. His mother was really connected to her. She liked that Rachel was always willing to go through with the relationship. Clayton’s father laughed and told Rachel that if he were her he would have hit him. His father was really taken with how in love Rachel was with his son.
Clayton is still attached to Susie
Clayton still has no idea who to choose. He said that even though Gabby and Rachel have met his family, he can’t stop thinking about Susie. It’s just so unfair to Gabby and Rachel, they stayed, they persevered, they met his family, and Clayton still thinks about the woman he “loves the most.” His parents were frustrated when he told them that. “I stopped listening to Susie,” Clayton said. “You’re grasping at straws,” said his father, “she made the choice.” “But I opened the door and told her to go,” Clayton said. His brothers asked, “Why didn’t you ask Susie to stay?” His family pushed him to choose between Rachel and Gabby because Susie left. Clayton said he was willing to risk everything for Susie. Jesse walked in and asked him what he wanted to do and Clayton said he wanted to see if Susie had anything else. Jesse said that Susie is still in Iceland.
Bachelor Nation Commentary
Kaitlyn, Rodney and Cassie from “Bachelor Nation” then took to the live stage. Kaitlyn said that at this point he has to go and take the risk with Susie. Cassie thinks Susie should follow her intuition and try not to push herself. Rodney just wants Clayton to think before he speaks.
Jesse Palmer teased that on Tuesday night we would learn the conclusion of Clayton’s journey, and we would also find out the identity of our new “Bachelorette”!
The two-night finale of “The Bachelor” concludes Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
