Fury as Sky News makes an embarrassing ‘slip’ during coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial

SKY News has sparked fury after they made a major slip during their coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service.

The news anchors accidentally broadcast a caption reading ‘Prince William Memorial’ – instead of Prince Philip – while reporting from outside the service at Westminister Abbey.

Around 1,800 people filled the Gothic church – in marked contrast to Philip’s funeral, which was only allowed to attend 30 under Covid restrictions and the Queen sat alone and masked in mourning.

But viewers, who were watching the ceremony from their home on Sky News, were left shocked, angry and confused as they turned on their TV.

In a major blunder, the news channel erroneously used a slogan reporting that the service was held to commemorate the Duke of Cambridge.

Eagle-eyed viewers immediately took to social media to point out the colossal error, which appeared on screen for ten seconds before returning to presenter Kay Burley.

One person wrote: “Did I just read PRINCE WILLIAM MEMORIAL?

“Oh dear, Sky News, that’s not a very good content review or proofreading, is it?”

A second said: “Um Sky News when did Prince William die?!?! How the hell could you do that faux pas!!”

A third was furious: “Dear Sky News, it’s not ‘Prince William Memorial’ you’re showing on chyron, it’s ‘Prince Phillip Memorial’.

“Do you hire 16-year-old interns?”

It comes as the somber queen delivered a heartbreaking farewell to her beloved husband during today’s poignant service.

Her Majesty, 95, appeared emotional as the Duke of Edinburgh was remembered following his death last April aged 99.

Buckingham Palace previously confirmed the Queen would be in attendance to introduce her family in Philip’s honour.

She was pictured driving from Windsor to London in her car with Andrew, despite his recent sex case shame.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and more Prince George and Princess Charlotte were among those present.

It is the first time the children – the elders of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – are attending a large public service.
