Now there is only one race left with both equals in the table.

And a hot evening witnessed Verstappen finally collides with Hamilton on the track in a Fierce battle for the top.

Verstappen clearly showed his displeasure as he and Hamilton stepped onto the podium after the race ended.

As usual, the top three drivers – including Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas – took their place on stage before being handed bottles of champagne to each other.

But Verstappen dashed off the podium after receiving his, while refusing to make eye contact with Hamilton.

And the Dutchman claimed afterwards there were several events in the race with which he ‘disagrees’.

Verstappen told Sky Sports: “It’s quite exciting. A lot of things happened that I don’t completely agree with but it is what it is.

“I tried on the track to give my best but the tires didn’t last until the last minute.

“I thought it was good for the late period but I was missing a bit of rubber at the end. But nevertheless [I was] still second.

“[For the collision] I slow down, I want to let him [Hamilton] because, I was on the right but he didn’t want to pass and we touched.

“I really don’t understand what happened there. It will be decided [at Abu Dhabi] Hope we have a good weekend.

“[On being voted Driver of the Day] Fortunately, the fans have a clear mind about the race.

“I’m just trying to race. This sport is more about penalties than racing. I’m glad the fans enjoyed it and I gave it my all for today.”

Hamilton was equally astounded by the collision, adding: “I didn’t understand why he was on the brakes so I hit him behind.

“It’s a bit confusing.”
