‘Fresh Prince’ co-star defends Will Smith’s Chris Rock slap in the face

Aunt Viv still loves the Fresh Prince.

Janet Hubert – who invented the character Vivian Banks in the 1990s TV series starring Will Smith – came to the defense of the new Oscar winner after the ‘King Richard’ actor killed comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars on April 12, 2019 struck Sunday.

“So proud of you!” she posted on Instagram after Smith, 53, accepted his Best Actor award for portraying Richard Williams, father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena.

Hubert then addressed the earlier fiasco.

“You can only take so much…sometimes you have to fight back,” Hubert, 66, continued. “Celebrate victory… nothing else matters. Both actions were wrong, but Chris didn’t have to go there.”

She added of Everyone Hates Chris creator, “I met him once… it was enough for me… very mean spirited.”

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to whip the mess out of so many people who didn’t respect me,” she wrote. “Will stood up for his wife, Chris Rock always doesn’t respect black women. Behind comedy hides a mean temper. BULL”

The shocking Oscar moment was sparked by a jab by Rock, 57, at Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, 50 suffers from hair loss because of alopecia. “Jada, I love you. “GI Jane 2 – can’t wait to see it,” he joked from the stage. Cameras then turned to the “Red Table Talk” host, who grimaced in response.

Seconds later, Smith was seen walking onto the stage without explanation, then stopped and attacked Rock. “Wow – Will Smith just blew my mind,” the host said as Smith left the stage and was quickly joined by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, who appeared to be comforting Will and Jada.

Much of the tone during their heated exchange was muted for US audiences. But back in his seat, Smith could be seen mouthing the words, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.” The loud exchange was not censored in some other countries.

The beloved actor once counts Hubert among his few famous feuds. It is was reported that a fallout between the two Fresh Prince stars catalyzed Hubert’s exit from the show, with her then being replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Viv for the remaining three seasons.

Hubert once blamed Smith, a producer on the show, for her sudden departure and the resulting gossip, according to her all-encompassing 2009 memoir: “Perfection isn’t a sitcom mom.”

A Interview with the Los Angeles Times 2016 revealed how Hubert felt shunned by her former castmates and the industry following her exit. “Take it from me… [I was] blacklist. Blacklisted, really. I couldn’t feed my child. They left me penniless, homeless and worthless. But what I always had was my dignity and I always will,” she said.

Her comments were spurred at the time by Jada and Will’s proposed boycott of the Oscars that year, which Hubert called a “made-up” publicity stunt.

“The Smiths just teased me because they’re such hypocrites and it’s all just a photo op,” Hubert also said.

The two had not spoken for 27 years until late 2020, when HBO Max aired a “Fresh Prince.” goodbye special for the 30th anniversary the premiere of the series.

“Yes, it felt like Jesus forgave Judas, didn’t it?” she told the Post in 2021 regarding her hatchet funeral and the congratulations she received from fans.
