MASERU (Reuters) – Lesotho’s former prime minister, Thomas Thabane, was charged on Tuesday with the murder of his estranged wife in a case that rocked the southern African highland kingdom.

His current wife, Maesaiah Thabane, who has also been charged with murder, sat beside him as the charges against them were read out during a closed-door court interview at the Supreme Court. Lesotho.

Maesaiah Thabane, 43, and the former prime minister, now 82, both deny involvement in the murder. Dressed in a navy blue pin-striped suit and light blue shirt, Thomas Thabane calmly sat beside his wife, who was wearing a maroon dress and straw hat, when the indictment was announced.

Lipolela Thabane was shot dead while sitting in a car near her home in the capital Maseru, days before Thomas Thabane was sworn in as prime minister in June 2017. They were going through a bitter divorce at the time of her passed away.

Police allege that Maesaiah hired eight hitmen to kill Lipolelo but was not present at the shooting.

Thomas and Maesaiah Thabane, who were married two months after the shooting, are also accused of intentionally killing Thato Sibolla, who was with Lipolelo Thabane when she was shot, and causing serious damage to property – the victim’s car. .

Thomas Thabane resigned in May 2020 following pressure to abandon his All Basotho Convention (ABC) party, opposition figures and South African mediators.

The case will be heard on March 8 to 10, 2022.
