Manchester United were held to a goalless draw at home to Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday, dashing hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The result leaves United 47 points clear in fourth place, two points ahead of Arsenal but the Gunners have three games left and two dropped points could prove vital in United’s bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League. .

Coach Ralf Rangnick’s side were booed on the pitch at the end of a draw against relegation-threatened Watford for failing to test out goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Cristiano Ronaldo sent the ball wide of the post after 5 minutes with a shot and then turned to finish for offside.

The former Real Madrid forward made a low cross from Alex Telles but his celebration was cut short by the lineman’s flag.

Former United goalkeeper Foster was quick to tackle Bruno Fernandes when he threatened and the Portuguese midfielder was then unable to find goal with a volley from center and headed back.

Watford are occasionally limited in their counter-attacks but, from the best of the counter-attacks, Emmanuel Dennis’ shot hits Raphael Varane and bounces harmlessly back to David de Gea.

United winger Anthony Elanga squandered a delicious opportunity after the break, shooting wide after a Paul Pogba cross but Roy Hodgson’s Watford defended doggedly.

Interim United coach Rangnick has been appointed to round out his team.

“We did everything beyond the score. It’s hard to get that result. In the end, if you miss that many chances then it is very difficult to win the game. We were in complete control for almost the whole game, we didn’t allow them any counter-attacks,” said the German.

“We need to be sharper in front of goal, you can hardly create more chances than we did today. In the end it was a very frustrating afternoon,” he added.

Hodsgson, who took over from sacked Claudio Ranieri last month, is pleased with the spirit his team has shown.

“We combined very well and played well enough to deserve the points,” said the former England manager.

“You always know that Manchester United will have a lot of the ball. In one or two times they saved the goal, we had a top-notch goalkeeper who made two or three excellent saves,” he added.

Before the game, both teams gathered behind a banner that read ‘peace’ in several languages, held by Rangnick and several United fans waving Ukrainian flags.

Watford is behind with 19 points, 3 points behind the 17th ranked team, Everton.
