PARIS (Reuters) – Paris St Germain qualified to end the Champions League group stage in fine form as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi scored twice in a 4-1 home win over Club Brugge on Tuesday.
French striker Mbappe took the Ligue 1 side to make it 2-0 in the first seven minutes and Messi added a third before the break plus a fourth with a penalty after the break.
PSG were guaranteed second place in Group A before the game even kicked off while Manchester City, who lost 2-1 to RB Leipzig on Tuesday, took the top spot and finished with 12 points, one point ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris team.
Brugge has been eliminated from the European tournament after finishing bottom of the table with 4 points, 3 points behind Leipzig.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet clumsily punched the ball into Nuno Mendes’ pass into Mbappe’s straight line, who burned the net after two minutes and the striker again scored five minutes later as he volleyed past the Belgian from the road. Angel Di Maria’s necklace.
Mbappe is the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals, less than two weeks before his 23rd birthday.
Messi added a third seven minutes before half-time with an effort from outside the box and although Mats Rits equalized in the 68th minute, PSG remained in control.
Messi had an easy win with a penalty kick in the 76th minute after being brought on by substitute Ignace Van der Brempt.
