A Florida teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student in a classroom closet has reportedly been sentenced to three years in prison.
Daniel Norment, 41, accepted two “best interest” guilty pleas to a count of unlawful sex with a minor and a count of criminal offenses against a student by an authority figure in exchange for tenure.
The agreement allows Norment to avoid a formal admission of guilt while accepting that the pleas are in his best interests, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The disgraced educator taught at Independence Middle School in Jupiter for six years before his arrest in May.
The secret tryst allegedly took place two years ago, and the victim in the case went to authorities last March to tell her story.
The woman, who is now an 18-year-old sophomore, said Norment nursed her when she was in middle school and later returned to see him after entering high school.
“[The victim] told me Norment used them and realized it was wrong for him and her to have sex at his school,” one investigator wrote. “She said she stopped speaking to Norment altogether [has] I haven’t heard from him since the sexual battery.”
Norment’s prosecutor filed a civil lawsuit against the Palm Beach County district last month, alleging that administrators “enabled” a history of predatory behavior toward female students.
The case alleges “inappropriately dressed” students routinely enter and exit Norment’s classroom at irregular times.
The woman’s suit also claims Norment was previously removed as the girls’ basketball coach after administrators learned he was allowing players to change clothes in his classroom.
As part of his sentence, he agreed to keep away from minors, attend a sex offender treatment program, and not work in or with schools after his sentence ended.
