Florida Southwestern basketball set for conference play

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA – The Southwest Florida men’s basketball team is once again among the top teams in the country this season but they’ll have to wait a little longer to prove it in the conference game.

Though, that could end up being a positive for the Bucs.

The Florida Southwestern Bucs’ 18th-ranked teams have once again kicked off the hot season, which is business as usual for the junior college powerhouse.

“I think we’re definitely constantly doing better as the rotation starts to take shape and the boys start to understand their roles and what they need to do,” said FSW head coach Eric Murphy.

That chemical formation led to 13 wins in the first 15 games of the season, including six in a row.

“I think we’re doing some of the things we need to do to keep getting better and playing better as we play and raise the bar,” said manager Murphy.

The pieces look like they will come together at the right time, but their road to the 4th Suncoast Conference Championship will have to wait a little longer to begin.

The team has been addressing a number of issues due to COVID and has postponed both conference openings this week just as they were heating up.

“It’s definitely disappointing because you never want a game to be cancelled, especially when we’re in a hot moment, we don’t want to lose that beat,” FSW guard Kaiyem said. Cleary said.

But the delay didn’t taper them off this extra week of rest.

“The focus is still the same. We are mentally prepared to focus better now on the conference,” said FSW striker Jon Dos Anjos.

“We just have a little more time now to address our weaknesses,” Cleary said.

That extra preparation and extra rest could ultimately benefit the team in the hunt for another banner in the arena after missing out on a congress and national tournament title a season ago.

“We were all definitely excited and ready to go with whatever I wanted to say,” Cleary said.

“I’m looking forward to coming back this year, you know I’m working hard for that. We are working for that every day,” said Dos Anjos.

As long as the Bucs have the numbers, they open their home Saturday conference game at noon in a duel with the women playing behind them at 2pm. Florida Southwestern basketball set for conference play
