Florida man arrested after driving wrongly, hitting sheriff at Christmas parade

A Florida man has been arrested after driving erratically in the area of a parade and crashing into the vehicle of a vice captain.

On Saturday, deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for reckless driving in the outer ring of the Inverness Christmas Parade.

While directing traffic, a deputy observed Aaron Williams, 25, recklessly driving into the intersection of US Hwy 41 North and Montgomery Avenue.

While trying to stop Williams’ car, Williams drove directly and hit a deputy. Fortunately, the co-pilot was only slightly injured. Williams then ignored the legitimate orders of several other deputies ordering him to stop, while he continued to swing erratically around obstacles blocking adjacent roads.

When nearby delegates swarmed over to Williams’ location, they were able to stop him while he was outside of the parade ground.

The vehicle was stopped and Williams was immediately arrested and charged with one aggravated battery crime against a Law Enforcement Officer and five counts Against an Officer Without Violence.

Police Chief Prendergast said: “What should have been a fun, festive parade was interrupted by a few devastating moments for those who witnessed the chaos caused by careless actions and Williams’ recklessness,” Sheriff Prendergast said. Our delegates quickly recognized the threat to public safety and responded immediately to Williams’ erratic behavior. While Williams has blatantly disregarded public safety, the actions of our delegates have shown out of service when it comes to the safety of our community. ”

“Road obstacles and temporary road closures at events are not there to inconvenience you; They serve the purpose of keeping event participants and spectators safe. Please be patient, and if possible, avoid event areas entirely,” the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Williams was taken to the Citrus County Detention Facility, where he is being held with a $15,000 per bond schedule.
